Humanitarian Demining R&D Program Q&A

What is Humanitarian Demining?

Humanitarian demining is a critical first step for reconstruction in post-conflict areas. The goal is to remove lingering remnants of war, allowing refugees to return to their homes and activities safely. Military demining typically clears paths only for military purposes.

What are anti-tank and anti-personnel landmines?

Anti-tank or anti-vehicle mines are designed to detonate with the presence, proximity or contact of a heavy vehicle, and are not usually triggered by a person. Anti-tank mines are usually used on or along roadways and other points of vehicular access to protect borders or strategic positions. Anti-personnel landmines are designed to incapacitate, injure or kill a person and first came into wide use as a method of protecting anti-tank mines from removal by the enemy.
